From Capt Carie Bayes, The Royal Regiment of Canada cadet corps

David Shaw was promoted to CWO and appointed RSM of The Royal Regiment of Canada cadet corps! Never in the recent history of this cadet corps has an "outsider" been so welcomed and accepted by the NCO's and cadets of this corps. I can only imagine the loss it was for you but Thank you for giving him to us. I think CWO Shaw is exactly what my corps has needed to pull them back to the former glory here in Ontario

From CV Mike Smith

Life in the wells is good, we're really enjoying it up here. We survived our first long, dark and cold winter. I sure missed the chinooks, but the northern lights were a pretty good trade-off! I spent alot of the winter working for an industrial medical company in the arctic and in our area. I got out to the diamond mine ice roads, and up to a variety of the rigs drilling in the area. I just applied to Ledcor for a position as their safety advisor, and stand a pretty good chance, so I hope to be around town more. I am also now a Lieutenant with our local Fire Dept, and am keeping pretty busy with that (hence the VX classes I was teaching to the dept) and have gotten to fight some fires and command at some, which is pretty cool. I signed up as a CI with the cadet corps, but due to the travel last winter I only made it out to a handful of parade nights. I hope to stay in town this winter, so hopefully I will be able to help out more. The corps is affiliated with 1CER in Edmonton, and the CO is interested in doing some engineering related stuff. Julie is doing well and is making a real difference at work, though it's tough to change some of the old boys' attitudes towards spills, etc. She also volunteers on the Fire Dept as our dispatcher and office staff. When she took vacation this summer we flew to Inuvik, and then drove down the Dempster Highway to Dawson City. It was a great road trip, with lots of wildlife and incredible scenery. We just pulled off the road and camped in the mountains. On our off-time I snowmobile alot, did some winter camping, hunt grouse and ptarmigan (you have to be a resident for two years before you're eligible for un-guided big game hunting) and went ice fishing sometimes. During the summers we bought two ATV's and have done lots of muddy, winch-filled trips. We also go camping and backpacking so we can take the dog. Since everyone has quads they think we're hardcore and crazy to hike! We've climbed the mountains behind the town on snowmobiles, quads and on foot. Some of my friends climb too, so we go rappelling and climbing some week-ends. There's a nice 170 foot rappell. It's really an outdoors person's paradise. I can't wait until I can hunt big game, especially Dall sheep. I have to go now, but please let me know what's new. Say hi to all those people at the corps. Mike

Just a note of thanks to the 2137.

Mr. Schultz dropped off the 12 pair of glasses you donated to my cause. These glasses will be leaving for Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico on the morning of Tuesday, February 24/04. I have told my RN contact that they are on the way, and she will begin looking for recipients as soon as they arrive. I do this anonymously, but have insisted that the 2137 be given credit for this great donation.

I knew I could count on my old regiment to come through.

Thank you,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Helen and the entire family at this difficult time. His loss will be felt throughout the entire Calgary Military Community and beyond!   Marty: You were a rock! An icon in our Cadet Corps! Your leadership skills were a shining example to all cadets and officers that passed through the corps and will never be forgotten! Mewata Armouries will never feel the same again without you there. Thank you for your advice, your guidance, you were a real "soldier's soldier"!   Stand Easy, Sir!   Onward!   Colin Fraser Chairman 2137 Calgary Highlanders RCACC Parent Association

I would like to send my condolences to the family of Martin McCumber. CWO McCumber was a great role model. Whenever something went wrong he was there to fix it. I remember when I was a young cadet and he was teaching me rifle drill, I was having problem’s with letting the rifle to the ground, he told me not to be scared of the .22 because it was older than he was, he than took the rifle from me and dropped it on the parade square. As the years went on every time I picked up a rifle he was there testing me. CWO McCumber was always there when I needed help, he will be deeply missed

I was sorry to receive the message about Martin McCumber passing away. Martin lived "up the hill and on the corner" of Wimbledon Crescent, the street my parents still live on in Wildwood, and my younger sisters went to school with his sons, one of whom is also named Martin. I first remember Martin McCumber when he was a Company Sergeant Major (MWO) on the Militia parades in the early 1970s when the Calgary Highlanders used to dress up some of the older Cadets in our kilts with Militia battledress tunics with the "MOBCOM" badges and stick us in the rear rank to fill out their numbers a bit. Martin McCumber was one of the people who took the soldiering part of being in the Militia seriously. Years later, in about 1976 or 1977, when I was in the King's Own Calgary Regiment, Martin McCumber was the Garrison RSM and I remember him doing things like spot checks on peoples "skill at arms", no matter what their rank, which was a bit of a shock for some of the many Captains and Majors in District Headquarters who were suddenly asked by the District RSM to strip and assemble an FN, or put on a gas mask correctly (with all due respect to Major Dick, who was one of them, but actually managed to pass his test with lots of huffing and puffing). Martin McCumber was awarded the Member of the Order of Military Merit in the late 1970s. I understand he was actuallly called back from the Supplementary Reserve to assist with the Cadet Corps and was awarded a further bar to his CD a year or so ago. I may be wrong, but if he got a 3rd bar (which would be about right if he joined in about 1958) he had a total of 42 years service, which is extremely unusual except for people who get credit for "service" as honourary Colonels. My thoughts will be in Calgary on Thursday. Regards John Westbury

I am deeply saddened by the news of CWO McCumber's passing. He gave so much to the corps. I remember him teaching the younger cadets about the history of the regiment and watching their faces while he spoke. They were mesmerized while he told them of the Battle of St. Julein Wood and Walchern. I learned so much from him and he always had time to answer any questions from the cadets on everything from leadership to polishing a pair of boots. He was a very active member of the Museum of the Regiments, every time I have been there I think he was also there volunteering his time to walk young and old through the museum. He knew everything about the regiment, I don’t think that there was ever a time that he was asked a question about regimental history that he could not answer. I will miss him very much and I send my sincere condolences to the family.
